Sun exposure
UV is the single biggest accelerant. Sustained sun on an exposed scalp breaks pigment down faster than anything else on this page, and it is the most common reason someone needs a retouch earlier than expected.
While you are healing, keep the area out of direct sunlight entirely. Once healed, a hat or sunscreen on the scalp is the highest return habit available to you. In Texas, this is not a small point.
The pigment type and quality?
Not all pigment behaves the same over time. Proper carbon-based SMP pigment, placed at the correct depth, fades warm and grey. Standard tattoo ink is formulated to hold a colour in a design, not to fade neutrally on a scalp, and placed too deep it can drift toward blue or green over several years.
This is worth asking about directly. Ask any artist what pigment they use and why that one. A good answer is specific.
Quality of the procedure
Depth control matters as much as pigment choice. Placed too shallow, the work fades early. Placed too deep, the dots spread under the skin and blur into patches, which is the most common reason SMP looks fake rather than natural.
Neither problem is visible on day one. Both are obvious at twelve months, which is why healed photos are the only portfolio worth judging an artist on.
Speed of hair loss
Your hair keeps doing what it was going to do. SMP covers the pattern as it looks today, so if your hair loss is still progressing, new areas can open up behind the work before the pigment itself has faded.
That is not the work failing. It just means your retouch schedule follows your hair loss rather than a calendar, and it is worth raising with your artist if your thinning is recent and fast.
What Are the Best Strategies for Maintaining SMP Results Appearance?
- Keep the scalp out of prolonged direct sun, and use a hat or sunscreen once healed.
- Moisturise the scalp daily with something mild. Dry, flaky skin makes the pigment look duller than it is.
- Avoid harsh chemicals on the treated area, including bleach and alcohol-based products.
- For the first four to five days after a session, do not scrub or shampoo the treated skin.
- Check any new scalp product with your artist before using it, particularly exfoliants and anything containing acids.
When is it Appropriate to consider smp retouch?
When it starts looking softer than you want it to. There is no fixed date, and it is a judgement call rather than a deadline.
