What scalp micropigmentation actually is
Scalp micropigmentation is cosmetic tattooing built for one job: making a scalp look like it has hair on it. We place tiny dots of pigment into the upper layers of skin with a fine needle, each one sized and angled to stand in for a shaved follicle. Step back and it reads as a close buzz cut, or as denser coverage where hair has thinned.
It is not surgery. Nothing is cut and nothing is transplanted. It also does not grow hair, and we say so at every consultation because that is the part people most want to be wrong about. SMP changes what your scalp looks like, not what it does.
It works for thinning on top, a receding hairline, a fully bald scalp, alopecia, and transplant or injury scars.
What a session is like
A full treatment runs 2 to 4 sessions spaced 10 to 14 days apart, so your skin heals between visits. The first session is the long one and it lays the foundation. The sessions after it add density and refine the hairline once we can see how your skin actually held the pigment.
Topical numbing keeps you comfortable. Most people describe the sensation as light scratching rather than pain, and it is easier than a conventional tattoo because the needle does not go as deep.
You will walk out looking too dark. Everyone does, and nearly everyone worries about it. Over the following week or so the dots lighten and settle into your natural tone.
Aftercare and how long it lasts
For the first few days, keep the treated area dry. No washing it, no heavy sweating, no swimming, no gym. After that window you go back to your normal routine.
Sun is what shortens SMP more than anything else, because UV breaks the pigment down. Once you are healed, a hat or sunscreen on the scalp is the single highest return habit for making the work last.
Results hold for years and then soften gradually rather than disappearing. Most clients want a retouch somewhere around the 4 to 6 year mark.
Why Austin clients drive to Fort Worth
It is about three hours straight up I-35. Whether that is worth it is a fair question, and the honest answer depends on what you find locally. Your hairline sits on your face permanently, so the people who make the trip have usually decided that an artist's healed portfolio matters more than the mileage.
Look at healed work before you decide anything, ours included. Fresh SMP looks sharp regardless of who did it. Work photographed a year later is where you see whether the depth was right.
If you are travelling in, say so when you book. We plan the spacing between sessions around your drive so each trip is worth making.
