Most of what gets written about scalp micropigmentation assumes a man with a shaved head. That framing loses a lot of women who would be good candidates, because the version of SMP that suits them is a different job.
SMP places tiny dots of pigment into the upper layers of the scalp to imitate hair follicles. For a man keeping his head shaved, those dots are the visible result. For most women, they are not meant to be seen at all. The pigment goes into the scalp showing through thinning hair, darkening the gaps so the hair sitting above them reads as denser. Done properly, nobody looks at your scalp and sees dots. They just stop seeing scalp.
It works for female pattern hair loss, diffuse thinning, a widening part, traction alopecia along the hairline, and alopecia areata. Choosing the Right SMP Technique and Artist

The artist is working between existing hairs rather than on open scalp. The scalp needs to heal between sessions, which is why a full treatment runs 2 to 4 sessions spaced 10 to 14 days apart rather than being done in one long day.
For the first few days, keep the area dry. No washing the treated scalp, no heavy sweating, no swimming. That includes holding off on colouring or chemically treating your hair until your artist clears it, which matters more for women than for the shaved-head version of this treatment.
After that, the main thing that shortens SMP is sun. UV breaks pigment down, so a hat or sunscreen on any exposed scalp is the habit that most extends the work. Expect a retouch around the 4 to 6 year mark.
Is it right for you?
SMP does not regrow hair and it does not slow hair loss. If your thinning is active and progressing, the work will need revisiting as the pattern changes, and any artist who does not raise that with you has not been straight with you.
