"Just give me a fade" means five different things to five different people — and that's how haircuts go wrong. At Santana Barbershop in Fort Worth, the consultation is half the cut. Here's the difference between a fade and a taper, so you can sit down knowing exactly what to ask for.
What Is a Taper?
A taper gradually shortens the hair at the sideburns and neckline only. The rest of the sides stay fuller. It's the more conservative, professional look — great for office settings, longer styles on top, and anyone growing their hair out. Tapers grow out gracefully, so you can stretch 4–6 weeks between visits.
What Is a Skin Fade?
A fade takes the sides and back down dramatically — all the way to bare skin in a skin fade — then blends up into the length on top. The result is high-contrast and sharp. Fades are typically described by where the shortest point sits:
- Low fade: Fades out just above the ears — subtle, versatile.
- Mid fade: The most popular — clean contrast without going full military.
- High fade: Starts near the temples — boldest look, maximum contrast.
Because the contrast is the point, skin fades look best refreshed every 2–3 weeks.
Which Should You Choose?
Ask yourself two questions: how often will you come in, and how much contrast do you want? Low-maintenance and subtle → taper. Sharp and high-contrast → skin fade. Still unsure? Bring a reference photo — our barbers will tell you honestly what works with your head shape, hairline, and hair texture.
