How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Take to Heal?

How long is the micro scalp pigmentation healing process?

Surface healing after each session takes about 7 to 10 days. The pigment carries on settling to its final tone for roughly 30 days after that, which is why we do not judge a result, or book the next session, until a couple of weeks have passed.

Because a full treatment is 2 to 4 sessions spaced 10 to 14 days apart, you go through this cycle more than once. It gets less alarming each time.

What healing actually looks like, day by day

Days 1 to 2. The treated area is red and slightly tender, similar to mild sunburn. The dots look dark, sharp, and larger than you expected. This is the stage where people text us worried, and it is completely normal.

Days 3 to 5. Redness fades. You may get light flaking as the skin sheds. Do not pick it, do not scratch it, and do not help it along. Pulling flakes early is the main way people damage their own result.

Days 6 to 10. The surface is essentially healed. The pigment starts lightening, typically settling around 20 to 30 percent softer than it looked on day one.

Weeks 2 to 4. Tone continues to even out and blend with your natural colour. What you see at the end of this window is close to the real result, which is why the next session is scheduled here rather than earlier.

What to consider before your session

  • Book a consultation first and agree the hairline before anything starts.
  • Arrive with clean, dry, unshaven-that-morning skin unless your artist tells you otherwise.
  • Do not turn up sunburned. Treating recently burned skin is not possible.
  • Skip alcohol and heavy caffeine the day before. Both increase bleeding, and bleeding pushes pigment back out.
  • Tell your artist about any scalp condition, medication, or history of keloid scarring beforehand rather than in the chair.

What to do after your session

  • Keep the area completely dry for the first few days. No washing the treated scalp, no swimming, no steam rooms.
  • No heavy sweating or intense workouts for about 5 to 7 days after each session.
  • Keep your hands off it. No scratching, no picking, no rubbing at flakes.
  • Wear a loose hat outdoors rather than sunscreen while it is still healing. Sunscreen goes on later, once the skin has closed.
  • Once healed, moisturise the scalp lightly and keep it out of direct sun. UV is what shortens SMP more than anything else.

When to call your artist

Almost nothing goes wrong here, but you should know what you are looking at rather than guessing. Get in touch if you see spreading redness, heat or pus after day three, if you run a fever, or if the dots look like they are blurring into each other rather than staying crisp.

Anything else, including the day-three panic about how dark it looks, is worth a text but not a worry. Call or text (817) 350-4414. Santana Studio Co, 4601 Boat Club Rd Ste 113, Fort Worth, TX 76135.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does SMP take to heal?

Each session's surface healing usually takes about 7 to 10 days, with the pigment fully settling to its final tone over roughly 30 days.

Why does my SMP look darker right after the session?

It's completely normal for the pigment to look darker and slightly raised immediately after a session. It lightens and settles to a natural tone as your skin heals over the following weeks.

When can I wash my head after SMP?

Avoid water, sweat, and washing the treated area for the first few days as directed by your artist. After that initial healing window you can gently resume your normal routine.

When can I work out or return to the gym after SMP?

Hold off on heavy sweating, swimming, and intense workouts for about 5 to 7 days after each session to protect the fresh pigment while it heals.
