What is scalp micro pigmentation (SMP) and what are the benefits?
SMP is a non-surgical treatment for the appearance of hair loss. We deposit small dots of pigment into the upper layers of the scalp, each one placed to read as a shaved follicle. On a bald head the result looks like a close buzz cut. On thinning hair it darkens the scalp showing through, so the hair you have looks denser than it is.
The benefits people actually notice, in roughly the order they bring them up:
- It is not surgery. No incision, no stitches, no general anesthetic, no time off work beyond a few days of looking mildly sunburned.
- You see a change after the first session, rather than waiting months for growth.
- There is nothing to maintain daily. No foams, no powders, no concealer to reapply and worry about in the rain.
- It costs considerably less than a transplant.
- It works across skin tones and hair textures, and on women as well as men.

How does the procedure work?
A full treatment is usually 2 to 4 sessions spaced 10 to 14 days apart. Doing it in one sitting is not possible and anyone offering that is skipping the part where your skin tells us how it holds pigment.
Each session works roughly the same way. Topical numbing goes on first. We map and agree the hairline before any needle touches you. Then the pigment goes in dot by dot with an SMP machine, building density in passes rather than all at once.
Afterwards the dots look too dark and too sharp. That is expected. Over the next week or so they lighten and settle into your natural tone, which is why the second session does not happen until we can see the healed result.
What SMP does not do
- It does not grow hair and it does not slow hair loss. Your hairline will keep receding at the same rate underneath the work.
- It does not suit long hair on top. SMP reads correctly under a shaved or very short cut. If you plan to keep two or three inches, the effect does not translate.
- It is not permanent in the sense of never needing attention. Pigment softens over years and wants a retouch, typically around the 4 to 6 year mark.
- It is a needle depositing pigment into skin. If you scar keloid, have an active scalp condition, or are pregnant or nursing, this is a conversation for your physician first.
Who would be a good candidate for scalp micro pigmentation?
Most people with thinning hair, a receding hairline, complete baldness, alopecia, or scarring are candidates, provided they shave their head or are willing to keep it very short, and provided they want the look of hair rather than hair itself.
